During this presentation, we will discuss how order sets impact the laboratory and examine specific issues regarding test ordering. Next, we will explore an example of an efficient order set development/maintenance process and highlight how the laboratory can contribute. Physician preference items (“favorites”) will also be discussed as well as possible solutions for optimization. We will offer specific examples of laboratory order set initiatives and optimization so that laboratorians can begin driving quality and cost reduction in their healthcare systems.

Dr. Fletcher is a board-certified anatomic/clinical pathologist and certified physician executive. He has significant experience in leading quality initiatives that enhance organizations’ safety and value. As ARUP’s medical director of Consultative Services, he leads a team of expert consultants focused on laboratory stewardship, laboratory efficiency, and outreach growth. He has helped develop laboratory stewardship programs throughout the U.S., which have captured millions of dollars in cost savings. Dr. Fletcher earned his MD from the Mercer University School of Medicine in Georgia and his MBA from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He completed a surgery internship at the Geisinger Medical System in Pennsylvania, as well as a residency in anatomic and clinical pathology and a cytopathology fellowship at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Dr. Fletcher has received numerous awards for quality and utilization, including research grants for blood utilization.
Jennifer Tincher is a senior healthcare consultant. She graduated from East Tennessee State University with a bachelor’s degree before graduating from Milligan College with a master’s degree in business administration. She is a registered respiratory therapist with experience managing patients with chronic cardiopulmonary disease. She has over 27 years of experience in healthcare, and has been in a leadership role for several areas, including noninvasive cardiopulmonary, respiratory, and evidence-based care. And, after being nominated by her peers, she received the prestigious Servant’s Heart Award from Ballad Health in 2018 for going above and beyond the call of duty in helping others at work and in the community.
